BURLINGTON, Vt. – General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announced today the grand opening of its Burlington Technology Center. Hosted by General Dynamics Engineering Vice President Mike Fisette, the grand opening celebration was attended by Sen. Patrick Leahy, Gov. Jim Douglas, Maj. Gen. Martha T. Rainville of the Vermont National Guard and members of the Vermont business community.
In July 2003, General Dynamics announced it would be consolidating major research and development and engineering efforts and transforming its Burlington, Vt., operations into an engineering center of excellence. Today’s Burlington Technology Center is the fruit of that re-engineering effort. Boasting more than 550 employees, the Burlington Technology Center is a state-of-the-art facility featuring the latest design and development tools. By collocating vital suppliers and partners, and adding on-site test and prototyping capabilities, General Dynamics is increasing efficiency, accelerating product development and strengthening the company’s position as a technological leader in the growing and extremely competitive defense and homeland security markets.
The recent completion of a 10,000 sq. ft. addition to the technology center’s Engineering Development Laboratory adds much-needed capabilities including complete prototype development and demonstration, high-speed video analysis, a software integration laboratory, a secure conference room fulfilling Department of Defense requirements, and 6,000 sq. ft. of high-bay workspace.
General Dynamics remains committed to Burlington, Vt., as a locus for its engineering-based activities. Through collaboration with the University of Vermont, Vermont Technical College and Norwich University, General Dynamics is helping to develop Vermont’s high-tech workforce of tomorrow.
"The Burlington Technology Center is essential to the future growth and continued success of our company," said Mike Fisette, head of the Burlington Technology Center. "As General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products’ premier technology incubator, the Burlington Technology Center is not only improving our technical edge in existing markets – it’s leading our expansion into vital emerging areas such as advanced sensors and materials."
